TEACHING

I believe that learning is never ending. Every day we learn about ourselves, each other, the past, the possibilities of the future, and how all of these aspects inform the now. Learning is not just knowledge of what came before. Learning is reflective. Our life is an archive and each person’s journey contributes to that archive. As a teacher, it is my job to help students discover their own history, revealing how it influences who they are, what they believe, and how such histories affect their views. Each student’s personal account provides contextual knowledge, allowing them to connect, relate, and gain a deeper understanding of complex ideas. By facilitating reciprocal conversations, respect for opposing opinions is promoted without having to apologize or refrain from sharing. Classrooms should be a place that people can be open and honest. Everyone’s opinion has value and a right to be heard.

I believe in inclusivity. I celebrate diversity. I encourage self-reflection. I facilitate an atmosphere of never-ending connections with infinite possibilities of rediscovery. I believe in knowledge. I believe in growth. I believe in change. Most importantly I believe in making a difference and being part of the solution. Teaching is a way to make a difference, to give back, to influence society. Changing one person can change the world. Even if I can only make a difference in one student’s life, seeing the positive influence my actions and educational approach has on that one student makes everything worth it.
